Wimbledon Introduces Video Review System in 2025.

Wimbledon court with video review technology

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in employing video review technology.

Replay systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Players are granted the option to contest certain rulings from the chair umpire, following the protocol already in operation at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

This technology will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step follows just a year after the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, including:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Potential hindrance end of a point.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a player can ask for.

Case in Point

An illustrative incident took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire watched a replay and ruled the player was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at all of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

A further change at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have sometimes been unsure whether a ball was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have further announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
