Virginia's New Governor Makes History as Virginia's Initial Woman State Leader

Throughout many decades, Virginia has seen 74 governors, each one of them men. On Tuesday, Abigail Spanberger broke this historic barrier by being elected as the initial woman to hold the office in the commonwealth's records.

A Campaign Focused On Economic Issues and Targeted Criticism

The former US congresswoman and CIA operative succeeded with a campaign that stressed everyday expenses and strategically targeted Donald Trump's policies instead of the president himself.

Early Life and Education

Hailing from in Red Bank, New Jersey on August 7, 1979, she relocated to a Virginia community at her early teens. Her father was an military serviceman who later pursued a career in police work; her mother was a nurse and community helper.

She studied at the University of Virginia, earning a diploma in literary arts. After graduating, she worked briefly as a substitute teacher before turning to a government work.

“I was raised believing that I wanted to walk the same path as my dad and I did,” she told attendees at a rally in the city of Norfolk over the weekend.

Professional Path

At the US Postal Inspection Service, she investigated involving narcotics, abusers and financial criminals. She executed search and arrest warrants, frequently being the sole female on the arrest team. She then entered the CIA and focused on national security, working covertly and overseas.

Life Change

In that year, she and her husband Adam, an engineer, considered their future. Living on the west coast, they were contemplating another foreign posting. They pulled out a globe and asked their eldest daughter, then in kindergarten, where they should go. the commonwealth, she replied, because “family and friends lives in Virginia”.

Spanberger stated at her rally: “And so we decided to transition from a federal career, to service to community because she was correct. All our relatives lives in Virginia.”

Political Beginnings

Back in her home state, she joined a grassroots group, which works against firearm incidents, and started a youth group. In 2017, she chose to run for Congress, which people told her was a “impossible task” because the party hadn't had secured the seventh district in 50 years.

“But I observed what the president was implementing with his actions and how he was creating conflict. And I noticed my representative repeatedly work against the healthcare law. And I realized I had to take action. So for the record: I won.”

Centrist Approach

In the capital, she quickly became associated with the centrist group, a collection of moderate and fiscally moderate Democrats. She prioritized specific policies: expanding internet access to rural areas, fighting drug trafficking and veterans’ services.

She built a reputation for partnering with Republicans and was often cited as the most cooperative member of the Virginia delegation. She was outspoken about political rhetoric that she believed turned off centrists, cautioning her party against partisan language that could be weaponised in contested districts.

The "Mod Squad"

Along with Congresswomen a former CIA analyst and Mikie Sherrill, she was labeled a part of the “pragmatic group” in contrast to the left-leaning “group” of AOC.

Run for Governor

In late 2023, she announced she would step down for a another term and would instead seek the state's top office in 2025.

Her campaign focused on themes of civic duty, support for schools and public works and defense of democratic institutions. Her federal service lent her authority on national security issues and she described government work as a vocation rather than a career.

Election Victory

This helped her to withstand rival candidate her challenger's attacks on social topics, notably the claim that she is an radical on individual freedoms and health care for transgender people.

Spanberger, who consistently argued that individual districts should determine whether transgender students can compete in school athletics, cast her rival as the candidate more out of step with the center of the Virginia electorate.
