Just prior to his name was called, a anxious worry flashed through Rory McIlroy's mind. He admitted he was hoping, "Not an F1 driver once more."

"Tonight represents a fantastic night for golf," he stated. "The sport was honored in such a major way, with the team winning and then with my award. It's a big night for golf, and with any luck we can build upon that."

This time around, however, there was no last-minute surprise. The result was clear, allowing a delighted McIlroy to reflect on a standout evening for both himself and the European Ryder Cup winners, who were crowned the year's best team.

Constant Motion

Instead of opting to attend the aftershow party, McIlroy was already focusing on his upcoming event. After played in a tournament in Florida and flown to the UK, he was flying right back to the sunshine state.

"The last 24 hours have been a hectic 24 hours," he said. "I'm looking forward to a little bit of a break over Christmas."

Hunger for More

Nevertheless, McIlroy made clear he has no plans to become complacent, despite securing the career grand slam earlier in the year. "My belief is I've got a several strong seasons in me," he claimed.

"More majors, tour championships, Ryder Cups, that's great. But provided that you feel like you can keep getting better and have the drive, that's the essential part."

Squad Celebration

Elsewhere, fellow European Tommy Fleetwood, who was on stage to collect the collective trophy, also applauded golf's remarkable night and his close friend's personal achievement.

"These become the memories that will stay with us indefinitely so to get the people's vote for that is amazing," he stated. "Seeing Rory receive that award, I think he is so worthy so much."

When reminded that McIlroy was only the third player from golf to win the award in its long history, Fleetwood grinned before joking, "Golfers aren't top of the list are we!"

Looking Ahead

His goal is to finally win his first major next year but he understands McIlroy still thirsts for more success. "As long as you want to be the greatest possible version of yourself, and you're still inspired, you'll find things to improve," he noted.

Football Loyalty

As he was leaving, one final question was raised. As a huge Manchester United fan, he has been requested to display his trophies at Old Trafford before. Might he be tempted to do it again after his latest triumphs?

"As long as they halt the flow of multiple scores in Manchester," McIlroy responded with a laugh. "There is progress. There's a touch of optimism around."

On the back of a 2025 for the ages, it's no wonder that he is looking on the positive aspects.
