The New Animated Series' Opening Sequence Chose the Wrong Popular RPG Show Track

The Mighty Nein, the most recent animated adventure from Critical Role, revealed an exciting introductory sequence. It showcases our favorite group of outcasts, outcasts, and criminals kicking ass and taking names, while teasing at multiple heart-wrenching backstories for characters such as the voice actor's wizard Caleb, and Travis Willingham's orc warlock, the character Fjord.

All in all, the opening appears amazing. But I couldn't help feeling that something was missing in the song choice.

The intro uses "Welcome to Wildemount", a truly stellar song composed by artist Colm McGuinness. This piece from the soundtrack album of the same name, the second release put out by the production company's music division Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a wonderful nostalgic option, and I believe that devotees of the sequel series will appreciate its inclusion.

Personally, The Mighty Nein's intro fails to capture the excitement and energy that was part of the second campaign's live-play sessions. "It's Your Turn", written by singer-songwriter Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit for me when it was first revealed in that year, and it improved further when co-founder the performer added lyrics to the tune for the series' animated intro in 2018.

Including singing from Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, Travis Willingham, as well as Riegel himself, the song was memorable and enjoyable. At the time, I hadn't seen the second campaign yet, but this was such an earworm that I kept it on my device. It's a song that excites you before you start an installment of fantasy hijinks.

The show's intro with "Welcome to Wildemount" doesn't strike the same chords for me. It's a grand composition, but based on my understanding of this party, I can't help but feel that its mood is a little off.

Naturally, Critical Role has stated that the animated show will have some surprises and variations from the original live sessions. An adjusted mood for its opening appears as among these.

The Mighty Nein will be released on Prime Video from November 19. If you can't wait before that, or wish to prepare to get to know the characters of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the original episodes are available on Spotify and the video site.
