Among all the mature animated films I’ve personally watched, nothing has lingered in my mind quite like the fear-filled finale of a viscerally violent as well as deeply subversive 2022 movie The Unicorn Wars.
In 2015’s, this Spanish writer-director developed a grim, somber and frequently brutal universe that included several minor , forlorn twinges of optimism.
Although The Unicorn Wars seems like it came from an impulse to push the medium further, the filmmaker clarified that it was more a try to express a global, multicultural theme about “the shared root of each battle.”
This theme is conveyed through a band of colorful pastel bears , obviously based on a popular line of lovable figures.
Growing up in a culture focused on aggression and the military-industrial complex, a lot of these animals are consumed by slaughtering unicorns, due to a religious scripture that claims the bears they previously were kings of the forest, before the unicorns forced them out.
Others did not entirely bought into the indoctrination, and would rather sample drugs and mate in the forest.
Unlike their cuddly counterparts, these bright beings display genitals and definite urges.
For a particular notably brutal, skeptical animal, the character Bluey, the battle against unicorns transforms into a route toward dominance — and especially to dominance above his softer, kinder brother Tubby.
The character acts as a tormentor , an obvious psychopath , and while terror takes over his unit and takes his comrades individually, he seizes more and more control personally, in increasingly violent, damaging approaches.
Simultaneously, the unicorns are enduring their own horror, through an expanding, harmful creature in their habitat.
“At the beginning, it seems like a humorous movie,” the filmmaker stated. “However it becomes a more serious and sad film. And in the finale, it becomes a scary feature.”
The Unicorn Wars commences resembling among the whimsical movies by a renowned filmmaker, that discover a mischievous joy in letting animated figures swear, engage in violence, or sex each other up.
Subsequently it evolves into something more like a bleaker work by that same director, with increasingly graphic violence and a noticeable connection to the real horror of war.
Ultimately, it becomes a full-on theatrical horror carnage.
The terror that makes this a Halloween-friendly watch kicks in well before than indicated.
The Unicorn Wars is ideal for the most dedicated fans of gore, for fans of intense movies who wish to view a film they haven’t ever watched previously, and who can handle a story that pulls no restraint.
See it in a dark room free from interruptions, and the finale will burrow deep within you and linger.
