The East African nation Welcomes Historic Items Following a 100-Year Residence in a German Family
A total of Twelve historical artefacts have been ceremoniously restored to the Ethiopian nation following being kept by a family in Germany for in excess of 100 years.
These items, initially collected in the early twentieth century by Germany's then-envoy to Ethiopia a German envoy and his spouse Hedwig, were transferred on this past Wednesday to the research center at Addis Ababa University.
This set included headpieces, armor and paintings, all regarded as historically significant in Ethiopia.
"These treasures still serve as a symbol of the long-standing and friendly connection between the German nation and Ethiopia," said the German diplomat, the ambassador to Ethiopia.
Dr. a professor, whose father was delivered during the family's assignment in Ethiopia, delivered the objects at a event joined by the Minister of Tourism Selamawit Kassa.
He explained that the family's goal to return the treasures was to "showcase their splendor with the audience and maintain the culture and past linked to my father's origin."
These artefacts were either considered donations or buys, based on the relatives.
"I would like to express gratitude to the Weiss family for practically showing their sincere affection for the nation by meticulously preserving these artifacts and vitally ensuring their repatriation to their legitimate nation," commented the minister of tourism.
She added that the pieces would soon be available to the people for research and educational purposes, describing the action a significant step in protecting Ethiopia's historical legacy.
"Actions are ongoing to return historical items that are found in the possession of collectors and entities around the globe," she affirmed.
In the era of colonial rule in Africa, thousands of historical items were plundered.
This request by the continent's states for the repatriation of taken objects has been met with certain positive outcomes in lately - although a number of objects are merely on temporary return.
Back in 2022, Germany was the first country to give back a portion of the renowned historical items to Nigeria as part of an effort to deal with its "dark legacy."
