The Details Known Regarding the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Shooting

At least 16 people perished and more than 40 were wounded when gunmen opened fire at a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, an attack local authorities are describing as a terrorist attack.

In the latest update, authorities have announced the death toll is 16, encompassing one of the alleged attackers. Moreover, 42 injured people were taken to hospital.

The victims are yet to be publicly named, but authorities state their ages span from 10 and 87 years old.

Below are the individuals who have been named so far.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Known as a father of five children, he worked as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and friends remembered him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a family member asked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.

She described the moments leading up to the attack, saying they were standing when the gunfire began. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.

The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured unspeakable terror in their youth. They had later relocated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

In a statement, the Foreign Minister declared that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the statement continued.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was a fatality during the attack, as per multiple sources citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospital, a significant number remain receiving treatment, with five in serious condition. The injured include two officers who responded to the attack.

One of the injured is a bystander who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Called a local hero, he received gunshot wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. It has been reported he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.

In a message, he recounted the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the response of those who came to assist. He said he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the shooting. He told reporters he listened to “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
