The beloved crime series Line of Duty will make a comeback for its seventh season, confirmed by the broadcaster.

A brand new six-part season created by Jed Mercurio will begin filming in Belfast this spring, as confirmed by the production team.

Vicky McClure shared her enthusiasm about the comeback, stating she was "so excited" about the series' return. Her co-star remarked, "What a joy it is to know that the main trio will be reuniting together soon."

The previous series wrapped up in 2021 with a finale that attracted more than 17 million audience members. Rumors about a new season have been circulating for some time, but official word only came this week.

New Challenges for The Team

Series seven begins with the anti-corruption unit no longer existing and renamed as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, as revealed by production details.

Martin Compston's character, Vicky McClure's role, and Ted Hastings remain working to combat misconduct within the police force.

Their work "has never been more difficult", and under these circumstances, the trio are assigned their "most delicate case to date."

New Character and Intricate Plot

An additional officer, Det Insp Dominic Gough, described as a charismatic officer known for takedowns of organized crime, faces allegations of misusing his authority to become a offender.

However, this investigation could be a deliberate distraction from a bigger threat still active in the shadows, the teaser suggested.

Speaking about the renewal, Jed Mercurio commented: "All cast and crew feels enormous gratitude to the show's fans."

"We're privileged to have had countless fans watch the ups and downs of AC-12 over multiple series and we couldn't be more delighted to be coming back for a new installment."

Mercurio continued: "Misconduct in this country is supposed to have ended while Line of Duty was off air, so I've been compelled to use my imagination."

Cast Reactions

Martin Compston called being part of the series as "a job of a lifetime".

"Not only the program's popularity but the colleagues I've worked with I now call dear friends."

"I can't wait to pull the waistcoat on again and get the team back together," he said.

Vicky McClure stated: "Obviously I'm very happy the show is back! Eager to work with the creator, Compston and Dunbar again. Belfast, we'll be there shortly!"

The veteran actor commented: "While anticipating the AC-12 days of Christmas, what a joy it is to know that the central trio will be back filming soon."

"Pleased with the news and anticipating those unexpected twists and turns."

Series Legacy

Line of Duty launched in 2012 and evolved into a highly successful TV dramas of the last decade, featuring notable actors such as Lennie James.

Broadcasters haven't revealed when the new season will premiere.

The conclusion of season six brought the extended plot about the hunt for criminal mastermind known as "the mysterious H" to a close, and the creative team indicated at the moment there were no intentions for additional seasons.

Nevertheless, the corporation confirmed on this week that a new season is now in development.
