The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities determined he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.

The ex-president was found guilty of plotting a government overthrow in last fall and given more than a 27-year term in jail, but he continued under house arrest pending court reviews.

Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" came to light.

This encompassed seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a call for a demonstration that could facilitate a chance to flee".

Judicial Records Show Flight Fears

Context of Sentencing

The former president was determined responsible of heading a conspiracy aimed at keeping him in power after he was defeated in the national vote to his ideological adversary, President Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he had knowledge of a plot which involved plans to assassinate Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Justice Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been managing Bolsonaro's trial.

The plot was stopped because it failed to get the backing of the armed forces officials. The current president was sworn in without problem on the first day of 2023.

But a week later, on January 8th, many his followers attacked and damaged government buildings in the capital, Brazil's capital.

The security forces intervened and around fifteen hundred individuals were taken into custody.

The judges found that the demonstrators had been encouraged by Bolsonaro whose scheme, they said, was for the national armed forces to step in, reestablish control and bring him back to power.

At the moment, the legal team called the 27 years and three months sentence extremely harsh.

He was also prohibited from running for public office until twenty-sixty - a decade minus two years after the end of his sentence.
